Selected Poems

On Time

If you could see me now
If you could only see me now
I’ve been a long time getting’ here
But I don’t know how

Wherever the wind goes
It sends those
Ages like stages
And life knows

When it’s over
It’s never
Forever

Love Removed

Anywhere the wind goes it sends those
Lovers away

Away from each other and under
The spell of another

Another who wonders
If staying with each other

Is worthy or should he
Have stayed

Have stayed in the first place
At her place

It was the place

Peggy Ann Can

First day, first day of school
No way, no way to fool

All the other kids that you’re just like them
Your daddy’s gone and your mama’s getting slim

Peggy Ann, Peggy Ann, can you come of age
No one to help you now, can you turn the page

Orphans, orphans, orphans in the hall
You are the little one, but you’re not small

Do you know me Peggy?
I’m the one who’s always known….Peggy Ann can

Black and White

Black and white, day and night
Every other one had to fight
Some will, some won’t and some might
Any other time, it would be alright

Silver Ballerinas

Olga and Tatiana must go
With Maria and Anastasia they know
That ballerinas are dancing ahead

With Alexei in tow slowly they go to Ekaterinburg
Where treasure explodes from their breasts
All in all and in between Tsarinas can’t die when they’re already dead
     Barry Dale Currence – December 13, 2006

Edgar and Annabelle

Their story was long, so long ago
Much longer than me
Edgar and Annabelle, Miss Annabelle Lee

For me not so long ago but seemingly as far
Not in the movies but just as much a star
She was Vivian, Miss Vivian Leigh
     Barry Dale Currence – December 13, 2006

Found Fortunes

Vivia, Vivia Anne if you can
Say to me now what you want to
All that you have if you want to
Now that you know where I am

The Red-Headed League

Out of Strand they came in August, 1891
With no lack of wonder nor intrigue
They assemble still for recompense and not just for fun
They all look back at innocence
That Red-Headed League
     Barry Dale Currence – December 13, 2006

Chiaroscuro

Towards the light we have traveled
On into the night we unraveled
Scenes from our lives in the making
Painted in dreams for the taking
      Barry Dale Currence – December 13, 2006

Gamine

Finding your way with no thought of sorrow
Carefree today and on the morrow
Misters and sisters, it’s all about the same
Come, be yourself there’s no one to blame
      Barry Dale Currence – December 13, 2006

Another Valentine (with nods to Poe)

Verse is only words I fear
Fixed in the being of the maker
Living in hope someone will hear
Living and seeking a taker

Both alive and alone are the words in my head
Looking for you far and near
Always living never dead
It is time to say it clear

I been loving you since my prime
Always forgetting you are not mine
Time to say this is for you valentine

Mirror of Life

Before you I must go
Taking my time going slow
Arriving this day or the next
Mirror of life in the text

Weary and restless of body and being
Now sadness gives way to sorrow
For as day turns to night
And when looking becomes seeing
I have hope for a better tomorrow

Alone in Darkness

Waiting in the darkness
For night to end
I've been lying here for hours
Breathing out and breathing in
Memories of a lifetime
Brought into view
Staring at the nighttime
Waiting for sunlight to begin
Looking out and looking in
Waiting for sunlight
Watching a new day begin
Bringing the future into sight
Look and you will find me
Breathing out and breathing in
I've been lying here for hours
Wondering
How's it all going to end?
Breathing out and breathing in
Breathing out and breathing in

The City Cafe

I’m goin’ away
Yeah I’m goin’ away
To Alabam
And the City Café

At the City Café, the City Café
Where a hungry man
Eats all he can
Is never turned away

The comfort room is narrow
And the lines are long
Whether you’re thick or thin
You’ll be backin’ in

Yes the lines are long and
Go around the block
People are a waitin’ just to get a seat
And if you’re a regular, you get extra meat

Waitin’ in line at the City Café
Waitin’ my turn, if it takes all day
While I’m waitin’, it’s pretty neat
If I’m good, they’ll give me a treat

The screen door slams, I hear Sammy say
The biscuits are in and the oven is hot
The biscuits are fine now, water biscuits they’re not
At the City Café, the City Cafe

Stevie Ray

Wheels came up and right back down
Leaving the world this fateful day
Scattered ashes all around
Of the band and Stevie Ray

BD’s Blues

Abigail’s Blues

Big John, Little John, where have you been?
Oh whoa oh ho oh Big, Big John, where have you been?
You been a longtime stranger here
And now you’re back again

Oh my Big John, where have you been?
Oooh my Big John, where have you been?
My nest’s been empty
And my patience at an end

You bring your stuff ‘round here, like it’s the best around
Ah haaa, you bring your stuff ‘round here, like it’s the best around
Go on back to your other mama
And stay ‘way from my little town

Go on back to the railway station
And don’t be comin’ back again

Go on back to that railway station
And don’t be comin’ back this way again
     Barry Dale Currence – February 1, 2005

The Ruby

I just can’t get hold of my big self
No, no, no, I can’t get hold of my great big self
Since you took the ruby
My achin’ love’s been on the shelf

Since you took the ruby
My self’s been on the run
Since you took your sweet red ruby
I’ve been on the run
Don’t know what to do….. can’t have no fun

Please come home sweet baby
Come on home to me
Please, please come home my baby
Come on home to me
I’ll die without the ruby, just you wait and see

When I lay me in my coffin
Please come visit me

I hope you’ll visit often
And bring the ruby with you, just for me to see

In the Box Car

Box car baby, box car baby now
Box car baby, in the box car now
Don’t know what you’re doin’
And I can’t show you how

Oh, I can’t show you
I can’t show you how
You all by yourself
You in the box car now

In the box car, nowhere near a train
You’re into the box car, and nowhere near a train
It’s good lovin’
But it just ain’t the same

Let loose of that box car
Get yourself a friend

Let go that box car baby
But keep it ‘til the end
     Barry Dale Currence – February 1, 2005

Roll in the Roadhouse Blues

Roll in to the roadhouse
Roll on in and choose
Roll down to the roadhouse
Sit yourself down and choose

Have your favorite pleasure
Ain’t got nothin’ to loose

Nothin’ to loose or maybe
There’ll be nothin’ to find
Nothin’ to lose so maybe
The fun is all in your mind

In you mind or maybe
If your dreams come true
Be kind to your baby
She’ll be kind to you

So roll in the roadhouse
Roll on two
Roll on past the roadhouse
Take your baby; take her on home with you

Wild in the Window

Wild in the window
Wild as can be
Get out of the window
Everyone can see

See how you do me baby
See what you did to me
Get out of the window
Come on home with me

Come on home and give me
Just what I want to see
Be proud of your good self
Save it for only me

Save it for me only
Save it for me

When I’m good and lonely
Bring it on home to me
     Barry Dale Currence – February 1, 2005

Yet Another Valentine (with more nods to Poe)

Tangerina my
Sabrina
Can you find me?
Longing’s behind me
Since I found you

Where ever we go
As lovers they’ll know
How to see
You Sabrina
Belong to me
Barry Dale Currence –February 7, 2008
