Biography

Barry Dale Currence

American Photographer

b. 1948

Self PortraitMy mother was 10 years old in 1929 when the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. Her mother had died the year before, leaving the 9 year old girl on an isolated farm in Northwest Kansas with her father and six siblings. She told me about growing up and why the area in which she lived was referred to as "The Dust Bowl" and why the era was called the "Dirty Thirties". She taught me manners, to appreciate what I have and to respect other people, especially women. My father was 14 that year and later graduated high school right in the worst of it, 1933. He was a letter carrier for the next forty four years. My dad was a self taught photographer who learned to appreciate the masters of the early 20th century. He introduced them to me and let me decide why or even if each were important. In the early 1970s my father, Si, explained to me what light does to silver halide crystals on black and white photographic film and how to get it there. I continue to use those skills in my own work after three and half decades. Si Currence was a career letter carrier and self taught photographer whose influence on me was greater than he knew. Though my passion will always be silver based, black and white "wet" prints produced in a traditional darkroom, digital technology in one form or another cannot be ignored and has become a part of photographic art. I use professional Nikon 35mm SLR film cameras and lenses with Ilford (b&w) and Fuji (color) films and Nikon Digital SLR cameras and lenses with studio quality strobe lighting for the absolute best results obtainable. I also have a range of medium (6 x 6, 6 x 7cm) and large (4 x 5") format film cameras. While shooting portraiture and glamour for FlashDance studios which I co-founded in 2004, I developed a shooting style and personal demeanor which puts the subject instantly at ease and allows me to capture that person and who they are. Travel, architectural and landscapes are an important part of my portfolio but seeing and sharing the female form and its awe inspiring beauty is my true interest and talent. Unique portraits to consider include glamour, boudoir, lifestyle, fetish, gothic or any style(s) you choose. Two hour sessions start at $275 with unlimited looks and clothing changes. Accepting commissions world wide. Travel from Denver, Colorado, U.S.A.
